History

ComedySportz Austin

ComedySportz Austin began sometime around Superbowl Sunday, 1986ish.

ComedySportz Founder Dick Chudnow (real name) dispatched a fella named Steve Slonina to encourage owner Les McGehee to cobble together a crew of comedians.

They began performing improvised ComedySportz shows in the late 80s before mullets were even a thing. Austin was formally added to the league probably sometime around 1990, or thereabouts, when an important ComedySportz representative named Dianah Dulany, a former ComedySportz Milwaukee player and by then the founder of ComedySportz Houston, invited Austin owner Les McGehee to become a limb in a growing mecha-kaiju amalgam.

Les owned & managed Austin from its humble beginnings to its-less-than-humble mid-life set through about 2012.
Terrill played previously with ComedySportz Austin and longed to be the cash cow for a flailing franchise

What is not known is what happened to ComedySportz Austin from 2013 until 2016, due likely to a dropsy outbreak or possibly a merger with fledgling Amazon Prime (citation needed), after which it was resuscitated in 2017 by long-time player and improvisor Terrill Fischer with his business partner Shawn Utterback.

Terrill played previously with ComedySportz Austin and longed to be the cash cow for a flailing franchise.Terrill grew dissatisfied with Austin home prices, eventually selling his Tarrytown two story for an exorbitant price, thus contributing to the Austin housing market bubble and deepening his existential moral crisis. Terrill took the courageous route by moving to San Antonio. It was either that or confront his contribution to society's collapse.

Preferring bald men to hairy men, Terrill sold the company to current owners Mike Topel, Kasey Christie, and Timo Xzavier. Although not technically bald, but close-shaven with barely noticeable male-pattern hair loss, Mike, Kasey, and Timo come from (pick 2):

  1. the Austin improv scene
  2. CSz Spokane as a former owner
  3. scrub team bench-warmers
  4. some, but not all of the above
  5. if you haven't picked an answer you should probably rethink reading this paragraph.

This trio acquired the franchise toward the end of 2019. What happened between March of 2020 and December of 2021 is now regarded fondly as "The Zoom Boom." No other planet-wide historical events can be recalled during this time, as a condition, called "Filter Face" erased much of the archive.

ComedySportz Austin boasts the highest owner-to-player ratio of any city in the league, with six former or current ComedySportz franchise owners.
